Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is a coalition?

A coalition is a group of organizations or individuals gathering together for a common purpose.

For the MEBFC, it means Taft-Hartley Welfare Funds leveraging their membership numbers to negotiate market leading agreements with health care networks.

  2. Is my fund required to use any of the Coalition's contracts?

No, the Board of Trustees retains its autonomy and can decide whether or not the Coalition agreement works for the fund. It it our goal to negotiate agreements that make it easy and obvious for Trustees to select the Coalition agreement.

  3. How much does it cost to belong to the Coalition?

The Coalition charges an annual membership dues based on the average number of members in the fund. The current dues rate is $2.00 per member per year with a minimum dues of $2,500 and a maximum dues payment of $15,000.

  4. Why should my fund join the MEBFC?

The MEBFC contracts enable Member Funds to control their health care costs. In addition, the Coalition provides a forum for funds to network and discuss issues that affect our funds. Most importantly, by working together, we bring labor's voice to the table, not only in discussions about the pricing of health care, but also the quality of health care.
